Vaughan Williams: English Folk Song Suite, Oboe Concerto, Tallis Fantasia, Etc.

Home > Music > ASV

This disc includes Vaughan Williams's best-loved works, from the haunting strains of The Lark Ascending and the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis to the jovial English Folk Song Suite. Also featured are the more rarely-heard Three Vocalises, intensely beautiful works exquisitely performed by Emma Johnson and Judith Howarth. The English Folk Song Suite is a jocular and contagious arrangement of songs such as the opening 'Seventeen come Sunday', concluding with 'Folk Songs from Somerset'. It is a light-hearted and rumbustious work from the inter-war years. In contrast, The Lark Ascending derives much of its poignancy from the fact that it was written in the last days of peace in 1914; a spine-tingling work of soaring beauty, the work is given a sublime performance on this disc by Iona Brown. Written for the Three Choirs Festival, the Tallis Fantasia divides the strings into three groups, creating a richness of texture hitherto unknown in English music. The Six Studies in English Folk Song form an ideal companion piece to the Suite, performed by Emma Johnson, who is joined by Judith Howarth for the haunting Vocalises. The Partita, like the Fantasia, uses divided strings and an Elizabethan model to create a work of great distinction.
