Sviatoslav Richter (1915-97) was a giant among twentieth century pianists: an brilliantly gifted musician with an enormous repertoire and a mercurial, often unpredictable but always insightful and carefully considered interpretive approach to piano works both familiar and rare. He personified the twentieth century Russian Piano School, rapidly rising as a star pianist in the late 1940s, playing Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto under the composer's direction, and becoming and international phenomenon when his first performances beyond the Iron Curtain in 1960 created a sensation. One of Richter's favorite recital partners was violinist Oleg Kagan (1946-1990), a protégé of Richter's friend David Oistrakh. Kagan and Richter began to play regularly together in 1969; Richter felt that Kagan revealed a true understanding of Mozart and left many affectionate words of praise to Kagan in his diaries.
