A ravishing disc of Martucci's lush music, featuring an exquisite rendition of the orchestral song La Canzone Dei Ricordi by soprano Rachel Yakar, beautifully supported by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Francesco D'Avalos.La Canzone Dei Ricordi was probably the first Italian orchestral song, and is imbued with passion and colour, the sensual soprano lines perfectly communicated by Rachel Yakar on this disc. The Noveletta is filled with lyrical nostalgia, and, like the Canzone's accompaniment, was originally for piano and subsequently orchestrated.The emotional depths Martucci plumbed in the Andante make it one of his most significant compositions. Its atmosphere seems to anticipate the early works of Schoenberg in its fluid yet rich harmony. George Ives plays the solo cello part in this work and in the Notturno, capturing with great sensitivity the intoxicating lyricism of Martucci's music on this outstanding disc.
