Khachaturian: Piano Concerto

This disc features some of Khachaturian's best-loved music, including the famous 'Sabre Dance' from the Gayaneh Suite, as well as the glittering and virtuosic Piano Concerto performed with great panache by Dora Serviarian-Kuhn.The Piano Concerto represents some of Khachaturian's most fascinating music, combining components of ethnic folk music, dark-hued harmonies and colourful orchestration, including the eerie flexotone in the slow movement. In contrast, the Gayaneh Suite is a sparkling and rumbustious collection of pieces based on folk elements. The 'Lullaby' begins with a senuous flute solo on an Armenian folk-tune, taken up by the orchestra in an expressive movement of lingering sweetness.The Suite from The Valencian Widow also combines delightful dance-music of orchestral brilliance and piquant syncopation with languorous melodies and lush instrumentation. The 'Humoresque' contrasts a lively Galop with gentler motifs, and the 'Intermezzo' ranges from its sombre opening to full-blooded writing based on Spanish music.
