The Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Gavin Sutherland have received great acclaim for their survey of British orchestral works on the White Line label, with this latest collection featuring crisp performances of a varied and delightful programme.Favourite works given new interpretations on this disc include Elgar's lyrical Elegy, the Two Aquarelles by Delius, one serene, the other sprightly; and Walton's sublime music from Henry V, 'The Death of Falstaff' and 'Touch her soft lips and part'.Alongside these much-loved works are four world-premiere recordings. The Divertimento by Gareth Walters, commissioned by the BBC, is a finely-crafted collection of varied movements performed with great aplomb by the musicians of the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. The Suite by Michael Roberts is a delightfully sunny set of pieces written between 1962 and 1971, while Fiddler's Green by Anthony Hedges uses rumbustious string-colours reminiscent of Warlock, also drawing on Scottish music for its inspiration. John Addison's Partita exploits the full range of string colours in an exhilarating conclusion to this essential disc.Walters, Gareth : Divertimento for StringsElgar, Edward, Sir : Elegy for Strings, Op. 58Hedges, Anthony : Fiddler's GreenWalton, William, Sir : Henry V Pieces (2) for String OrchestraDelius, Frederick : Aquarelles (2)Addison, John Mervin : Partita for StringsRoberts, Michael : Serenade for Strings SpringRoberts, Michael : ComplineRoberts, Michael : Perpetuum mobileRoberts, Michael : CherubimRoberts, Michael : Divertimento for Strings Only $11.98 - Click here to buy now! |
