Debussy: Premiere Rapsodie

Home > Music > ASV

Featuring a host of internationally-renowned artists, this disc brings together some of Debussy's finest works, from the clarinet-showcase Première Rapsodie performed by Emma Johnson and the English Chamber Orchestra under Yan Pascal Tortelier, to the seminal String Quartet performed by The Lindsays.Brilliantly orchestrated, Debussy's Première Rapsodie is a sparkling work calling for consummate virtuosity from the soloist, just as the lilting and seductive Danse Sacrée et Danse Profane exploit the qualities of the harp, the instrument around which they are based. Debussy's extraordinary innovations in solo piano music began with works such as the Deux Arabesques, the delicacy of which belies their harmonic freedom and exploration of the piano's sonorities. Clair de Lune, from the Suite Bergamasque, is renowned for its limpid tranquillity, and this disc features an historic recording of the piece by the great pianist Shura Cherkassky.Written at the end of his life, Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp is a fascinating and poignant work of great subtlety. Debussy had honed his chamber-music skills in the earlier String Quartet, drawing on a plethora of influences reflected in the other works on this joyous disc.
